Frequently Asked Questions About Insulation Rebates

Is the federal insulation tax credit still available?

No. The federal 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit for insulation expired on December 31, 2025. Projects completed after this date are not eligible for the tax credit. However, Minnesota utility rebates from CenterPoint Energy, Xcel Energy, Otter Tail Power, and Minnesota Energy Resources remain available and can save you up to $3,000 on your insulation project.

What insulation rebates are available in Minnesota?

Minnesota homeowners can access rebates from CenterPoint Energy (up to $3,000), Xcel Energy (up to $3,000), Otter Tail Power (up to $2,800), and Minnesota Energy Resources (up to $1,400). The amount you receive depends on your utility provider and project scope.

How much can I save with insulation rebates?

Depending on your utility provider and project, you can receive rebates up to $3,000. CenterPoint Energy offers up to $1,500 for wall insulation and $1,300 for attic air sealing plus insulation. Xcel Energy offers 40% of project costs up to $1,200 per improvement type.

How do I get my rebate check?

RetroGreen Energy handles the rebate application process for you. After we complete your insulation project, we submit the paperwork to your utility company. You’ll receive a rebate check directly from your utility within 6-8 weeks of project completion.

Do I need a special contractor to get insulation rebates?

Yes. CenterPoint Energy requires a Rebate Eligible Installer with BPI certification. Xcel Energy, Otter Tail Power, and Minnesota Energy Resources have similar requirements. RetroGreen Energy is certified with all major Minnesota utility rebate programs and handles the application process for you.

Does attic insulation without air sealing qualify for rebates?

No, CenterPoint Energy does not offer rebates for attic insulation alone. Their program requires air sealing as part of any attic project. This requirement exists because air sealing is essential for insulation to perform effectively. Air sealing stops warm air from escaping through gaps and penetrations, which matters more than insulation R-value alone.
