If all of these conditions are met, you’re probably fine adding new insulation over the old. You’ll want to add fiberglass batts or blown insulation to bring the total R-value to at least R-49 for Minnesota. Calculate what you have, determine what you need, and install the difference.

This approach is the most budget-friendly. You’re not paying for removal and disposal. You’re not creating the temporary disruption of removing everything. You’re just adding to what’s already there.

  • Rodent contamination or droppings can harbor disease. If the insulation is covered in mouse or rat droppings, it needs removal and disposal. Clean the framing before adding new insulation.
  • Water damage or staining means water has been in the attic. You need to find and fix the leak before adding insulation. Then remove the damaged material to prevent mold growth.
  • Settled cellulose insulation that’s compressed significantly might be from decades ago and might contain formaldehyde or other outdated binders. If it’s significantly settled, removal and replacement with modern material is often better than adding more.
